Club 38 asks whether a modestly priced mechanical watch can offer distinction through proportion and manufacture work, rather than an additional complication.

The number on the dial is not the dimension

Despite the name, Club 38 measures 38.5 mm across. The steel-back version is 8.4 mm high, with a 46.7 mm lug-to-lug length. Those three figures tell a more useful story than diameter alone: a slender watch can still occupy a meaningful length of wrist. The broader hands, numerals and substantial bezel also change perceived size. A purchase should therefore begin with fit and readability, rather than a rule that one diameter is universally correct.

Manual winding as a deliberate choice

The DUW 4001 is an in-house hand-wound movement with up to 53 hours of reserve. Omitting automatic winding helps support the slim profile and gives ownership a small recurring ritual. It also means that a buyer who expects a watch to keep itself wound through daily wear needs to make a conscious adjustment. A manufacture calibre is a meaningful specification, but it is not a substitute for asking how the watch will be used or what servicing will cost over time.

Value includes the delivery promise

The German store listed the steel-back reference at EUR 1,520 including VAT, with a three-month delivery indication when checked. That is more useful than repeating an assumption of immediate availability. The overall proposition is coherent: straightforward time display, a slim case and recognisable design at a price that does not depend on precious metal. It should be assessed as a complete ownership experience, including the leather strap and manual winding, rather than reduced to the movement’s origin alone.
