Moritz Grossmann Hamatic Enamel: The Quiet Dial and the Unconventional Engine

Black enamel gives this anniversary watch a restrained face. Turn it over and the hammer-winding mechanism changes the conversation.

An anniversary requires a precise date

The 2026 edition marks 200 years since the birth of Carl Moritz Grossmann in 1826. It does not celebrate two centuries of uninterrupted production by the present company, founded by Christine Hutter in 2008. That distinction strengthens the story. The modern manufacture is consciously interpreting an earlier watchmaking tradition, not asking an anniversary to erase the gap between historical workshop and contemporary business. Its legitimacy must be visible in the object it makes today.

The enamel sets a different tempo

Black enamel produces depth without a busy graphic composition. Applied gold numerals and carefully shaped hands have room to establish their own proportions. The craft is not equivalent to applying black paint: successive firing stages introduce risks that influence the yield of acceptable dials. Yet handwork alone should not end the evaluation. The collector still needs to examine the consistency of the surface, the finish of the numerals and the way the hands remain legible against the gloss.

Automatic winding without the familiar rotor

The calibre 106.0 uses a pendulum-style hammer weight rather than the familiar full rotating mass. The wearer’s motion supplies energy; the mechanism converts it into winding. The interest lies in the interpretation of the idea and the visibility of its execution, not in any suggestion of perpetual motion. With eight watches per metal, this is a small production proposition. The official boutique listed EUR 75,600 including VAT when checked—a useful reminder that a pre-tax press price and a consumer checkout price are not interchangeable.
