An automotive name with an instrument-led proposition
Porsche Design introduced the Chronograph 1 Utility – Limited Edition for Hodinkee on 1 October 2026. Limited to 350 pieces and launched at €8,950, it approaches the car-and-watch relationship through an idea that both products need: information that can be read quickly.
The strongest news is the return of centrally displayed chronograph minutes within this Porsche Design interpretation. Moving an elapsed-minute indication away from a small subsidiary counter can change how a user reads a timing interval. That offers a more specific argument than a racing colour or a logo. The question is whether the whole display remains clear when several hands share its centre, not simply whether it looks more technical.

The central hand measures elapsed minutes
The stop-minute hand measures up to 60 minutes and uses a red, aircraft-shaped tip. It belongs to the chronograph; it is not a second time-zone hand. The 24-hour display at 12 o’clock is synchronised with the main time display, indicating day or night rather than independently tracking another city.
Those distinctions matter because a busy dial can invite capabilities that its movement does not provide. Here the design’s appeal lies in assigning a clear job to each indication. The new arrangement references the useful architecture associated with older military Porsche Design chronographs, but its value should be assessed through present-day readability rather than the romance of an operational past.

A new movement, not a recovered Lemania
The WERK 01.340 is a modern automatic calibre built on Porsche Design’s existing chronograph platform. It restores a central-minute function familiar from the Lemania 5100 layout; describing the watch as containing a revived vintage Lemania would confuse design lineage with the identity of the movement.
The announced specification includes COSC certification and a 60-hour reserve. Certification gives the performance claim a defined testing context; it does not eliminate the influence of wear, service or operating conditions. For a collector, the relevant achievement is that the historical display has been re-engineered for a current product. Claims about broader patent history are not needed to judge that result, and should not substitute for the movement’s actual functions.

The connection to Porsche is also in the leather
Alongside the titanium bracelet, the package includes an Agave Green Bund strap made from leather used in Porsche sports-car interiors. This is a material connection to automotive manufacture, not a claim that the strap was cut from a previously owned car. A quick-change system lets the owner choose between the bracelet and the more conspicuous leather configuration.
The case and supplied equipment make the launch price comparable only with similarly configured offers. A 350-piece limit describes quantity, not a guaranteed resale outcome, and current allocation must be checked separately. The Utility’s most durable proposition is the alignment of design and task: the automotive name provides a context, while the layout has to earn its place by making timing intervals understandable.
